Vintage Bathroom Renovation: Inspiration

January 12, 2021 by Ashley

One lesson we’ll be taking from 2020 is to never stop transforming your home into a place you love. The main bathroom in our house has always been “acceptable” – updated by the previous owners but using cheap materials that didn’t match our style or the style of our house. We’ve been setting aside money and this week, demo starts on our vintage bathroom renovation!

Here’s the before, from the original listing.

The space was just uninspired. Two stock Home Depot vanities attached together to form one large vanity, with marble floor tiles for counters, basic sinks, inexpensive faucets, and a modern grey tile floor – out of place for our 1915 historic Craftsman home.

For this vintage bathroom renovation, we’re planning to keep the footprint nearly identical. The focus of the renovation will be aesthetic materials and resolving a few unseen structural issues that could cause water damage if left as-is.

“Modern vintage” is the best way to describe the style we’re going for with this bathroom renovation. Lots of geometric shapes, aged bronze hardware, and rich wood tones.

I love the hex tile we used in our carriage house bathroom. We’ll be reusing that for the shower floor and using a slightly larger format hex tile for the bathroom floors. For the shower walls, we’re planning to use an “imperfect” subway tile – a white tile with slight dimpling to look add a little visual interest without appearing too busy. We’re going with a charcoal grout throughout for easy cleaning (if you have white grout in your bathroom/shower, then you know how hard it is to keep it white!).

The white stock vanity is being replaced with a custom oak cabinet and drawer set with shaker-style doors, stained in a rich dark brown. It will be topped with a marble-look quartz for extra durability.

We’re planning to finish the space off with schoolhouse lights, seeded glass, and a vintage look washable rug (a must for any high traffic space).
